Trial at Rouen

St. Joan of Arc · February–May 1431

I was thirteen when I had a voice from God to help me govern myself. The first time, I was terrified. The voice came to me about noon; it was summer, and I was in my father’s garden.

The voice told me to be good, and to go to church often, and that I must go into France.

I answered: I am a poor girl who knows neither how to ride nor how to make war. But the voice said to me: It is God who commands it.

Asked whether she was in God’s grace, she answered: If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me.

I would rather die than do something which I know to be a sin, or to be against God’s will.

Everything I have done, I have done by the command of God.

You say that you are my judge; I do not know if you are; but take good heed not to judge me ill, because you would put yourself in great peril.

In God’s name, I was not sent to give you fear, but to raise the siege of Orléans, and to lead the King to Reims for his crowning and anointing.
