Speech at the Scaffold
St. Thomas More · July 6, 1535
1Masters, I am commanded by the King to be brief, and since I am the King’s obedient subject, brief I will be.
2I die His Majesty’s good servant, but God’s first.
3I am not come hither to preach a sermon; I come hither to die.
4I call upon God to witness, and I beseech you all to pray for me, that I die in and for the faith of the Holy Catholic Church.
5I pray you, Master Lieutenant, see me safe up; and for my coming down, I will shift for myself.
6I beseech Almighty God that it may please Him to preserve and defend His Majesty the King, and to send him good counsel.
7I ask you, good people, to pray for me in this world, and I shall pray for you elsewhere. I now beseech God to save the King and send him good counsel.
