Brethren, the hour through which we are passing is beyond all question the most solemn that our generation has ever seen — possibly even the gravest in the whole history of our country.
Today the hymn of the Angels is hushed: peace, good will to men of good will, it does not ring over our land; and yet, brethren, must we not in spite of all still hear the word of the Lord?
Patriotism is a sacred thing; it is one of the shapes in which charity appears. No man has a right to say that he holds aloof from patriotism.
The religion of Christ makes patriotism a positive law; there is no perfect Christian who is not also a perfect patriot.
But it should be understood that patriotism does not mean hatred of any other nation. It means love of one’s own. And love of one’s own country finds expression in observance of its laws.
The power of the occupier is no lawful authority. In the depth of your soul you owe it neither respect, nor attachment, nor obedience.
The sole lawful authority in Belgium is that which belongs to our King, to our Government, to the elected representatives of the nation. This and this alone we recognize.
Courage, brethren! Suffering passes; the crown endures. I had rather be with you in the hour of trial than wear the diadem of those who are the cause of your distress.
May the year on which we are entering see the triumph of right over might, of liberty over tyranny; may the God of Armies cover with His shield those of our brave men who are fighting for our just cause.
Let us place ourselves under the protection of our Lady of Sorrows and pray for our country and for those who defend it.
